All about French Pharmacy and Thermal Water Products

If you already traveled in France, you certainly visit one of these old looking « officines », places where you can buy drugs prescriptions and all kind of quality cosmetic products that obtained a special authorization to be sold there.

I personally do buy all my cosmetics products in pharmacies (or in « parapharmacies » that are pharmacy corners in larger retail shops).

Thermal spring water cosmetic products are among them and I will tell you why they are so popular here in France

1/ They have been prescribed by doctors since thousand of years

In the past, spring thermal water was the main product used by doctors in France to treat eczema, burns or even psoriasis because they discovered that it soothes irritated skin and that it also brings pain relief. It’s still used for these medical indications but since then thermal spring water was recognized for its numerous benefits for daily skincare.

2/ They have many virtues

Purifying effect, antioxidant properties, anti-inflammatory and soothing effects, their benefits are numerous.

Here a little video (from Uriage).

I use cold thermal water to help me wake-up! I keep it in the fridge and I spray some on my face in the morning. It gives me an instant boost before my coffee!

3/ They offer a very large scale of products

Hydrating creams, masks, scrubs, lip balms, lotions and cleansers from anti-aging to sensitive skin, acne prone or suncare, you’ll find a wide range of products made for all kinds of concerns. Some brands like Avène or La Roche Posay even offer special make-up products for sensitive or acne prone skins.

4/ They are not really expensive

Compared to quality-like products these thermal water products are really costless.

5/ They are totally safe!

After reading the previous paragraphs, you’ve already understood it. Dermatologists prescribe them since years.  No allergy risks, no itchiness, no unwanted redness. These products are free from artificial perfumes or colouring. All the ingredients might not be organic but they are strictly controled just as their side effects.

What is thermal water anyway?

The properties of thermal water are owed to the extensive voyage of rain water, through rocky mountains (at a depth of up to a thousand meters) before resurfacing. During this lengthy process, the water becomes rich in minerals and carbon dioxide. Thermal water is therefore a type of mineral water that is located deep underground which contains healing properties and is exempt from bacteria and pollution. The mineral content of a particular thermal water depends on where it comes from.

Some brands as Uriage, Jonzac or Saint-Gervais are less internationaly marketed than Vichy, Avène or La Roche-Posay but are also very valued here.

Here is a selection of my favorites, you can find easily out of France
