My Favorite French Designer of the Moment – 3/3 – Valentine Gauthier

Valentine Gauthier is my last crunch of the season. But who is Valentine ?

Valentine Gauthier

With a unique and refreshing view on fashion, Valentine Gauthier creates contemporary and urban collections and proposes a refined and complete wardrobe based on her travel and daily inspirations. As an alumna of Rochas and Maison Martin Margiela, she invariably charms with collections driven by youthful prints, flattering silhouettes, and spot-on details.

But that’s not all

All her clothing and accessories are produced in collaboration with NGOs in developing nations and always made in the same country where the raw materials are sourced. Giving special attention to detail and quality, since the beginning, she collaborates with craftsmen and high-end manufacturers in France, India, and Spain. Then, the pieces, made of noble and natural materials, are designed in Gauthier’s Atelier in the Marais.

Without claiming it as a real « green activist », why does she feel concerned about the environment? Is it because ‘it’s part of her generation concerns ». Or is it because, to ease her parent’s fear about her future living as a fashion stylist, she first studied geo-ethnology?… Hopefully, she finally decided to follow her passion for fashion and to complete classes at the renowned Atelier Chardon Savard in Paris. Simultaneously, she was working as model and assistant in Martin Margiela artisanal studio. She learned a lot there. Then she presented the International Festival of Young Fashion Designers of Dinard and won the first price.

Thanks to this price, in 2007, Valentine Gauthier funds her eponymous brand and in the same year opened her first flagship boutique in Paris fashion district, le Marais. Since then, she also sales through a website and few partner boutiques in France and around the world.

Sometimes, when Valentine is hanging around her workshop-store, you can even benefit from her stylish pieces of advice. If you’re soon coming in Paris, I’ll be really happy to bring you there and share this experience with you!
